4:20 – 6 PM (yes, it starts at 4:20...) -- CBD and it's Future in the Beverage Industry

As recreational marijuana sales continue to open up in states across the country, and with political leaders across the aisle calling for legalized hemp farming and distribution, the market for both CBD and THC, has exploded. The legal cannabis industry brought in $9 billion in 2017 and that’s prior to the launch of recreational sales in California this past January. Hemp-derived CBD is estimated to grow to a $1.8 billion market by 2020.  Let’s ring in this talk at 4:20 and address how it will impact the craft beverage industry.

Market Trends - Where is the Industry Going?

The global craft spirits market size was valued at USD 6.13 billion in 2016 and is expected to witness a growth at a CAGR of 33.4% from 2017 to 2025. Craft spirits are domestically produced in distilleries, which have a production volume below 750,000 gallons. Millennial population with considerable purchasing power is expected to drive the market over the forecast period.  We will look at the current trends and look forward to what the industry will bring in coming years.

11 AM – 12:30 PM -- Federal Regulations and Legal Changes within the Craft Industry

We will discuss the ways in which federal and state legislation has impacted the growth of the US craft spirits and beer industry.  The legal framework in place for the production and distribution of alcoholic beverages, which is a legacy of the Prohibition movement, continues to have a significant impact on the development of the craft spirits & beer industry.  The growth in the craft industry has not been proportional across all states, and as such, certain state regulations can restrict how Distillers & Brewers can distribute and as a result limit their growth opportunity.

11:30 AM - 1 PM -- Distillery/Brewery Sustainability

Like any product that relies on agriculture, beer and spirits can have a major environmental footprint. Growing barley, grains, distilling and brewing takes a lot of water and expends a lot of energy. More craft distilleries and breweries can mean more waste, CO2 emissions, and a significant negative impact on climate change.  There are many craft distilleries and breweries that are dedicated to making craft products that we can feel good about drinking as they are to creating incredible taste experiences.  Let’s dig into those brands and see what current and new technology is available to lessen our environmental footprint.

1:30 – 3 PM -- Establishing American Viticulture Areas (AVA) for Grains

An American Viticultural Area, or AVA, is a specific type of appellation of origin used on wine labels. An AVA is a delimited grape-growing region with specific geographic or climatic features that distinguish it from the surrounding regions and affect how grapes are grown. Using an AVA designation on a wine label allows vintners to describe more accurately the origin of their wines to consumers and helps consumers identify wines they may purchase.  If wine can use AVA designated grapes to increase the value and quality of their products, why not implement those same criteria for us in the craft spirits and beer category with our grains and hops?

3:30 – 5 PM -- Financial Options as a Small Business

Being the boss can be exhilarating. But there are also significant risks to going out on your own. Unfortunately, the failure rate of small business is high, with only 50 percent of new businesses surviving for five years. The keys to success lie in proper budgeting, determining the right product for your market or audience, marketing that product, and then selling it at the right volume.

What small business owners sometimes forget is that they need to adapt their own individual financial plans for the new realities and risks of being a business owner.  

Comprehensive financial planning for an individual or couple generally involves tax planning, risk management, investment planning, retirement planning and gift and estate planning. We have these resources available for your and a quick Finances 101 for your small business.

A Craft Distillery or Brewery is a small, often boutique-style distillery established to produce beverage grade spirit alcohol in relatively small quantities, usually done in single batches (as opposed to larger distillers' continuous distilling process). While the term is very commonly used in the United States, what truly is “craft”? What are the hard line definitions and how do you walk the line if you are not “technically” CRAFT? And if you TRULY are CRAFT, how do you differentiate yourself from those who aren’t?

As we kick off the start of an amazing week, we travel to where the past meets the future with elaborate furnishings, lighting and decor all in the Steampunk style.  We also bestow the Craft Spirits and Craft Beer awards to those who rose to the top of their categories in the inaugural CDBA Craft Spirits & Craft Beer Competition.
